Who Did You Talk to Today?

I always ask myself who have I spoken to in the course of the day that will help me to grow my business. I talk to a lot of people every day because it’s my job. Some are brand new individuals who I just met. Nice people that just happen to have come across my path. Some in the restaurant and some in the check-out line at the grocery store. All are just people when you first meet them. But then, I find out more about them.
Recently I had a couple at one of the bars in the restaurant and I was chatting with them. Really nice folks and lots of fun to talk to. But then we got talking more. He was a big sports fan , as am I. I was selling tickets to an event about Babe Ruth, Bourbon and cigars. He thought it was great and we talked further. I soon discovered that he was the lead counsel for a Fortune 500 Company and had an interest in what I was doing. He had never been to the restaurant and loved it. But now, he was a fan and was going to tell his legal associates about the great time he had at the restaurant. He is also going to meet with me to look at future projects. I ended up with a customer, a fan, and someone who can connect me to a wide array of potential guests and private events. Just because I “talked to someone”. It is vital to get to know guests at a level beyond just “How is everything?”. Not everyone I engage in conversation wants to chat, but you might be amazed at how many do.
The World has become a very non personal place where we send a text, send a brief email and just look to get the job done. But we all crave a little personal connection with people. I have been talking to people for years and all of the time people see me and rush over to shake my hand or give me a hug. Many times I can’t recall how and when I made the connection. But they remember. That’s what is important. They remember me because we had some time and I talked to them. The next person you talk to can be an individual with a large group of contacts that is looking for somewhere different to go. I think it was the television show “Cheers” where everybody wanted to go where someone knew their name. Look to get to know your guests and find out who they are. The results can be amazing.
