You run your business 24/7. You are always marketing, thinking about ways to make your business more successful. It’s an all the time endeavor. However, sometimes you need to take a break and get a little break from the day to day challenges. But that doesn’t mean that you aren’t able to look for ways to make yourself more successful.
Recently , I was able to get away for three days with my lovely wife of 40 years for an anniversary trip to the great city of San Francisco. We spent three days seeing the sites and enjoying the amazing cuisine. We went to restaurants, toured and even took a trip to Alcatraz Prison. But while we were relaxing and having fun, we were looking at everything that other folks were doing.
One night we went to a highly recommended “Old School” restaurant where we had a nice dinner. Not exactly what we thought, but good service, good food and nice drinks. However, I ordered a cold seafood platter for an appetizer that was really well thought out, delicious and well presented. Oysters, clams, crab claws, smoked trout, pickled herring, crab, olives and greens, smoked salmon, and egg. A great idea that when I came back, I spoke to our chef about. It will soon end up on the menu.
The second thing that I came away with was a small advertisement down by the famous San Francisco Wharf. It advertised a Harbor Cruise wine tasting and the tag line was “No Sharks, Just Great Whites.” I loved it. Now that I’m back, I am going to do a series of wine tastings at our nationally rated Wine Bar with that as the hook! 5 tastes of great white wines. We’ll have the chef do a small plate appetizer of grilled shark (we should get to eat them instead of them eating us) and we’ll get the foam fin shark hats ($1.28 each on line) and I’ll talk about the wines. I also have a recording of Robert Shaw talking in the movie Jaws about the sinking of the Indianapolis when it was sunk. We’ll build an entire event around something that I saw while I was on vacation.
Someone said that there are no new ideas and all that we are really doing is reinventing them.Look for great ideas wherever you are. Then take them, put your creativity to work and make money. But remember, The Shark idea is mine!
